EFFECTIVE HARDENING THICKNESS AND CLASSES
DEFINITION: EFFECTIVE HARDENING THICKNESS in surface hardening
For pieces hardened superficially and subjected to stress relief tempering ( Tmax < 180 °C ),
it is the distance between the external surface of the hardened layer and the internal surface where the hardness
assumes a conventional value HV1 ( named limit hardness )
calculated as a function of the minimum surface hardness demanded
Limit hardness ( HV1 ) = minimum surface hardness ( HV1 ) x 0.8
If the core hardness exceeds the limit hardness, it is assumed a conventional value equal to :
Limit hardness ( HV1 ) = core hardness ( HV1 ) + 100
If the value exceeds that of the established surface hardness , we have to utilise
a different method agreed between the two parts
Alternatively it is possible to define the effectvie hardness thickness as the distance from
the surface where the hardness HV1 is similar to the conventional hardness deducible from the graphic
of figure 1.1 as a function of the C content of the hardening material ( according to UNI 4847 : 1970 ).
For example the conventional hardness HV1 of a C50 steel it will be equal to about 490 HV1.
